Thetford-based Team C Express Logistics Ltd has joined over 700 logistics businesses, all members of the UK’s eight major Pallet networks, to put their combined fleet of 23,500 vehicles at the government’s disposal.
In an unprecedented move headed by the Association of Pallet Networks (APN), the networks have joined forces to offer their services for the express distribution of critical emergency and food supplies.
Between them they have 30,000 employees, over 750 depots, and offer 100 per cent national coverage by postcode. As member of the UPN & Fortec Distribution network, Team C Express Logistics Ltd is a leading distribution specialist within its own region, with knowledge of local distribution centres, essential businesses, hospitals and community hubs.
Tim Clements, Managing Director at Team C Express Logistics Ltd said: “We are proud to play our part in this unique collaboration as the entire UK industry joins forces to transport the most vital supplies. Collectively our sector has unrivalled resource and the individual companies are local experts with vast experience of express distribution and a key link in the UK supply chain.”
APN chairman Paul Sanders says: “We are uniquely placed to offer our services to ensure that emergency supplies coming from anywhere and destined for any corner of the UK, can be delivered quickly, safely and reliably to support critical services, whether in rural or urban settings.
“We would urge the government to take advantage of our unique skills set and infrastructure at this time of national crisis. The supply of emergency supplies for critical operations – not least ensuring food in our supermarkets and well stocked pharmacies and hospitals – is one of the most important aspects of protecting the UK public during this crisis.”
Pallet networks are one of the most efficient forms of freight distribution enabling overnight deliveries of consignments of any size from a single pallet upwards, anywhere in the UK. Regional members collect freight from their local area, and transport it to the most appropriate regional Hub, where it is reloaded onto vehicles returning to its destination area.
This model is particularly important at a time when many users of essential goods are requiring small frequent deliveries of vital goods with many drop points within a given locality. In 2019 UK pallet networks delivered 26 million pallets of goods.

APC is relocating operations in 2012 to a purpose-built £14 million, 128,000 Sq.Ft National Hub at Kingswood Lake, Cannock, Staffordshire. The new Hub will provide more than double the capacity of the current site near Wolverhampton and will benefit from state of the art material handling systems, including an Interroll cross-belt sortation system. APC will also expand its hub-based trunking fleet with more Don-Bur EcoStream double-decker trailers.
APC's New Hub
“The new hub is essential to APC’s national operations and future development; it is a major investment made possible through the growth we are enjoying across the APC network. With the high demand for our next day deliveries, we have outgrown our existing hub in Essington. The new site will provide us with a well-designed, state-of-the-art and very efficient national base. By remaining in the West Midlands we can retain our highly skilled workforce, and the location is convenient for future recruitment. We are equipping the new hub with advanced systems that will boost productivity and efficiency,” said Ivor Skinner, APC Overnight MD.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for economic growth and prosperity Ben Adams said: “APC Overnight is a national leader in the courier industry and another flagship firm to locate at Kingswood Lakeside. We’re proud to have developed the site and rejuvenated it from a former open cast mine into a thriving centre for business. The economy and prosperity are our top priorities and we are ensuring that we invest in supporting business and in the necessary infrastructure to attract major national and international companies.”
Loading Bays
APC Overnight is trialling the latest Don-Bur aerodynamic trailer in the first stage of a major project to replace its entire trailer fleet. The double-decker, curtain-sided “EcoStream” trailer is fitted with an innovative lifting deck enabling safer, quicker loading and unloading – and unique to this unit is the option to use the rear doors where access is an issue. Roll-out of the new slope-roofed trailers is planned for 2010.
The EcoStream trailers will complement the advanced DAF CF85 tractor units which APC Overnight has recently added to its fleet, enabling improved fuel consumption. Together, the trailers and EURO 5 rated tractor units will provide efficient transportation with reduced carbon footprint.
“The EcoStream is a cutting edge design that scores points all round for reducing emissions as well as improving safety. The upper lifting deck is lowered for loading and then raised to allow access to the area beneath, which not only improves safety but also speeds up the process. We were also keen to solve the problem of limited access to the decks which we’ve achieved by configuring the design to allow loading and unloading via the rear doors. This flexibility enables faster turnaround of the trailers,” says Syed Ziaullah, Operations Director, APC Overnight.
“Aerodynamic trailers are the way forward for APC Overnight. These trailers overcome the problem of inertia and rolling resistance, allowing the tractor units to perform more efficiently. Less drag caused by the trailer means better fuel consumption and lower emissions. This is important as our investment in EURO 5 rated equipment is enhanced with the EcoStream trailers, and even with older tractors there will be an improvement,” he adds.
